A police pursuit that began in Maysville ended in a fatal crash on Interstate 35 early Monday morning.

The pursuit began just after midnight when a Maysville police officer responded to a disturbance call in the 100 block of Elm Street. The call involved a report of an intoxicated man in a black sport utility vehicle hitting a vehicle outside a residence, according to a statement from the Maysville Police Department.

As the officer arrived at the scene, a black SUV parked in the street in front of the residence drove away. The officer tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver of the vehicle, later identified as 32-year-old Felipe Martinez of Fort Worth, Texas, did not pull over.

The officer pursued Martinez through Maysville’s residential streets and then west on State Highway 19 towards Pauls Valley.

As Martinez approached Pauls Valley’s city limits just west of I-35, Pauls Valley police successfully deployed stop sticks, causing both front tires on Martinez’s vehicle to go flat.

Martinez continued to flee southbound on I-35 with multiple law enforcement agencies in pursuit at speeds of close to 80 mph.

Martinez lost control of the vehicle near mile marker 60 on I-35. The SUV rolled an unknown number of times. Martinez, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle, according to an accident report from Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Martinez was transported by ambulance to Arbuckle Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead due to injuries sustained in the collision.

The crash was investigated by OHP Troopers from the Garvin/Murray County Detachment of Troop F. Troopers were assisted by Wadley’s EMS, Garvin County Sheriff’s Office, Lighthorse Police Department, Maysville Police Department and Pauls Valley Fire Department.
